Citizenship

Naturalization is the process by which you obtain U.S. citizenship. There are a few different ways in which you are eligible to apply for naturalization. You may be eligible if:

  • You have been a lawful permanent resident for 5 years,
  • You have been married to a U.S. citizen and have been a permanent resident for 3 years,
  • You are the child of a U.S. citizen, or
  • You are serving in the U.S. military

In addition to proving your eligibility, you must also prove to USCIS that you have “good moral character”. If USCIS determines that you don’t have good moral character, you are not eligible to become a citizen. Therefore, it’s important to understand how your past may impact your eligibility, and what information to include in your application to demonstrate your good character. Common bars to naturalization include prior criminal history, substance use issues, or prior misrepresentations about your immigration status.

After you file your application, you will be interviewed and take the naturalization test. USCIS then will decide whether to approve or deny your application. If you are approved, you will receive an invitation to a naturalization ceremony where you will take the oath of allegiance and officially become a U.S. citizen.
